IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025: Powering Transformative Conservation

The IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025, the world's largest and most influential conservation summit, will be held from October 9 to 15 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, under the theme “ Powering transformative conservation”.

Every four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress brings together world leaders, governments, civil society, the private sector, indigenous communities, and academics to address the most pressing environmental and sustainability challenges, providing a crucial window of opportunity to ensure a sustainable and resilient future for nature and people.

Faced with unprecedented global crises, the world urgently needs collective action to conserve our planet's life support systems” said IUCN President Razan Al Mubarak.

Structure and Strategic Approach of the Congress

The IUCN World Conservation Congress is structured around three key components: the Forum (a space for technical and social debate), the Members' Assembly (the highest decision-making body that sets the global conservation agenda), and the Exhibition (a showcase for innovations and initiatives).

These three pillars focus on five key thematic areas designed to accelerate the implementation of the global biodiversity framework and promote resilience:

  • Expand resilient conservation
  • Reduce climate risk
  • Ensure equity in conservation
  • Transition to nature-positive economies
  • Foster innovation and leadership

The core strategy is to merge indigenous ancestral knowledge with cutting-edge innovation at all levels, while ensuring the inclusion of all voices and promoting the global transition to nature-positive economies.

The Red List of Ecosystems will be present at the Congress

The schedule of activities has been structured to address the above themes intensively, allowing for expert debate, the presentation of initiatives, and crucial decision-making on biodiversity conservation at the global level.

The Red List of Ecosystems plays a crucial role in this global agenda, and we are committed to actively contribute to it. We will leverage our scientific leadership and policy advocacy capabilities, with a focus on equity, to drive conservation forward.

Below we highlight some of the events related to the Red List of Ecosystems and the Commission on Ecosystem Management that will take place during the Congress.
